Presenting THE Dina Toki-o

Today, we have a guest doing a super special post on the one and only Dina Toki-o. Mariam from Blackburn, England is an undergrad studying Events Management and PR. She has a, how do you say, passion for fashion, especially hijabi fashion. And she LOVES Dina who is her inspiration. But c’mon people, who doesn’t love Dina?!

Our guest blogger caught up with Dina while she was vacationing in Egypt. Read on to find out a little more about our favorite designer:

Aspiring fashion designer, Dina Torkia has transformed the ‘hijabi’ (refers to modest Muslim style of dress in general) world of fashion with her state of the art designs.

The 21 year old half-English half-Egyptian diva has been into fashion since GCSE level (General Certificates of Secondary Education for students in the UK). Her interest in ‘hijabi’ fashion developed whilst she was studying textiles at secondary school. Dina however stopped designing from about 17 years of age up to the age of 20 due to a lack of confidence. Nevertheless she completed personal projects on the side. In August 2010 Miss Torkia was back, when she posted her first design on her Facebook fan page and now here she is hot off the press in the world of fashion.

Dina is definitely different in one way from millions of designers out there, as her collection focuses specifically on Muslim women. Torkia says, “I think in western stores there is so much choice now for ‘hijabis’ to find really suitable clothes, it’s not a problem anymore like it used to be a few years back.”

Dina’s designs are fresh and firing as she uses traditional techniques to create a modern look. Her designs have chic and contemporary twists that are combined in sublime colours and luxurious fabrics. Dina says she likes to make “each and every outfit as different from the last as possible.” She feels her collection caters to “every occasion” from casual outfits to evening wear. The new line boasts the quality and attention needed for any shopper turned self stylist.
All clothing Dina is wearing is from her upcoming collection
Wondering which of summers big ideas to bite into? Whet your appetite with Dina’s collection as the ‘hijabi’ chic hopes to launch her label by the end of summer 2011. It is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for savvy shoppers to pick up the seasons key pieces. I’d like to wish her the very best in making a big impact in the Muslim world of fashion. Miss Torkia can be found on the major hi tech social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogger and LookBook, where she’s known as Dina Toki-o, so go check her out because she’s worth it!

Salaam Dina, I’m sure you’re tired of hearing how you’ve inspired many women so i’ll just tell you that I was once someone who wore mini skirts as I thought it was fashion but am now fully covered up and have felt the power and liberation this brings, your blog showed me I can still express myself with my fashion taste without contributing to the corruption in society where muslims imitate non muslims. I have given up modeling and chosen a more modest career path, but would be interested if you have any modeling opportunities in the halal sense ;-)
    love and hugs,

    Dina Hamed

Hijab is not about fashion, it is the complete opposite, to sacrifice the self and what pleases the senses. Fashion pleases the eye and the ego. To dress clean and simple is key. Think Catholic statues of Maryam allahiSallam, instead of Ines De La Fressange.

If you put the gals in these pictures next to a girl who doesnt wear a head covering yet is simple…I would easily choose the more modest one as the girl who shows her hair.

I don’t wear a head covering…came across this by accident on my quest to research more into it since I plan on wearing it soon. The word “hijab” has just turned into a big joke…I’m sorry…but I would rather be like my sissy who covers and is simple, or like my friend who doesn’t cover and is simple, then some “hijaby” who is just a walking talking mannequin. My hubby saw this and said he’d rather that they not wear covering over their heads and dress like that…looks more like Sofia Lauren with long sleeves than a real Muslimah to me (no offense to Sofia Lauren she was beautifully proportioned and had a flawless complexion) ….

Sorry for the lecture. I am no one to judge. But in the end it is not so much about covering the skin and hair then it is about truly being a simple human being. The Queen of Sheba was glamorous herself, until she accepted Allah subhanawatallah as her Creator and Master.

Asalamu Ailakum, I myself am a muslim (still a teenager), I wanted to share this so here we go!

Since I am in my last year of high school (It’s a bit different over here in the Netherlands) and I can’t find a new study to do. I thought about marketing or in care but no, that is just not me. What I really want is to be is a designer, a role model like Dina and a lot of others. But I can’t (the training is too far way from my home and since I’m from a moroccan/arab family well we all know) and I tell myself everyday I need to find a study that I wanna do in the future insha Allah because I need to sign up in Januari. Well I first need to get my high school diploma, but I think I’ll get it insha’Allah. So I told myself (I used to make a lot of designs and drawings but I stopped) to hurry up and pick one! I still haven’t found something that really suits me, the fact that there is nothing I like is another problem. I stopped worrying and trust Allah swt. That after I got my diploma I will go back to my designs and try again!

But what I actually wanted to say is that people like Dina and others give me hope, and strenght. That I CAN make it, maybe not now but later!

    Peace Out! ^_^
