Winter Hats for Hijabis

A reader and friend of mine recently sent me an email asking about winter hats that can be worn over a hijab:

I’d love to know how to pull off (winter) hats for hijabis. I’ve been wanting to get one but am not the type to be able to pull just anything off (so probably couldn’t do one that was TOO funky, don’t want to look like a dork). I also generally wear abayas…I feel like its sometimes harder to pull off a casual, laid back look (vs with jeans I mean).

The answer is, it’s actually surprisingly easy to pull off a hat over a hijab/headscarf, even if you’re an abaya/jilbab wearer. What type of hat would you be drawn to if you didn’t have your hijab on? Be adventurous and try on a bunch of different styles. Also keep in mind that abayas are generally more feminine and elegant on their own so tighter fitting, smaller hats like beanies or knit hats might work best. However, once you throw a coat on over your abaya, it’s a whole different ballgame. If your coat is a little tougher, like a utility jacket style, then a bigger trapper hat would work perfectly. A good rule to follow is, nothing too huge, and the more fitted to your head it is, the better it generally looks. I would also try men’s hats if you’re wearing a thick hijab because they’re bigger and will give your head a little more breathing space. Below are a few of my suggestions. And the best piece of advice I can give you is to wear it with confidence!

Pssst: If you’re up in the colder states, chances are you still have a long winter ahead of you, but for the most part, winter hats and essentials are actually on sale, including some of those hats above!

And if you’re wondering how to wear your scarf under your hat, here’s a quick and easy tutorial for you to watch below!

Do you have any hijab over hat tips? Or a favorite hat style that works well for you? Sound off in the comments below, or on facebook/twitter! I love to hear from you guys!
